Tiger Onyx

Special characteristic: Translucency. Light can pass through portions of the stone, which is why Tiger Onyx becomes especially impressive when LEDs are installed behind it.

Tiger Onyx — Material Profile

Material: Natural onyx
Typical appearance: Amber/gold, caramel, chocolate brown, cream/white and sometimes rust-colored bands. The strong layered pattern is what creates the “tiger stripe” appearance.

Typical slab thickness: Around 2 cm and 3 cm, although thinner/custom material is available from some fabricators.

Maintenance

Use a pH-neutral natural-stone cleaner and soft cloth. Avoid vinegar, lemon, acidic bathroom cleaners and abrasive chemicals because they can etch the surface. Sealing requirements should be confirmed with the actual slab/fabricator; one Tiger Onyx supplier recommends periodic resealing.

Important purchasing advice

Never approve Tiger Onyx from a small sample alone.

Every slab is different. For a luxury project, I would want to see photographs of the actual full slabs, preferably dry and backlit, before purchasing. If we’re doing a large feature wall, I’d also select sequential slabs so the fabricator can book-match or vein-match them.

Also, “Tiger Onyx” is a trade name rather than one universally standardized geological/color specification, so appearance can vary significantly between suppliers. For example, sources describe material associated with Turkey/Iran while another supplier lists Iran/Pakistan.

My design rating for a luxury Texas residence: 9/10 as an accent material; about 5/10 as an everyday functional surface.
